Folly on #Etsy

It started out as an experiment, just testing out the basics of Etsy so I could help my daughter, who wants to sell her necklaces. Now I have a shop front. I haven’t sold a thing yet. In fact, I’ve spent 80 cents. I’m reading “Starting an Etsy Business for Dummies” by Katie Shoup and I’m being pulled into this rabbit-hole, wondering what I could make that would sell, how much people would be willing to pay for my slightly wonky work, and if I could earn at least more than I spend in craft supplies.

Etsy is an online craft fair, essentially, where crafters can sell their handmade items. It’s not the only place by any means, but it’s the one most think about when considering selling crafts. I’ve seen quite a lot of tv commercials for them lately. For their platform, Etsy charges a twenty cent listing fee and charges 5% per sale. From what I’ve seen so far, it doesn’t make any sense to sell small, inexpensive stuff, but instead produce larger, higher priced items.

Are any of you selling your crafts online? Are you using Etsy or some where else, and what sells best? Any suggestions for what I should make next?
