Folly Quest: the search for towers

felt folly

I’ve decided to have a new travel based quest, so that I can get my family out of the house in a relatively safe way. I thought about finding waterfall hikes near and far from us, but I’ve been told not to go chasing waterfalls, just stick to the rivers and lakes that I’m used to. Anyway. It’s folly I’ve decided on. Specifically folly towers.

I made a folly symbolize my creative endeavors, meaning a thing that is just there as a work of art, not for any particular purpose. I was first introduced to them in the book 101 Dalmations by Dodie Smith. Outside the De Vil estate (Hell Hall) the dogs hide out in a tower that is part of the wall, and it is explained that it is a folly building.

I started my search for folly towers after reading an article from the “only in your state” website. This website often has descriptions of weird little things from restaurants to weird roadside attractions with click-bait titles like “You never knew these magical places existed”. They had an article about towers, and it sparked my imagination. I set the criteria- it had to be a tower made out of rock, not a metal fire tower, and preferably you could go inside it and look out from the top of it. After compiling a list of candidates and eliminating a few, I had a quest. For some reason, there are quite a few in Connecticut- tower building was fashionable there, I guess.

My first destination was the stone tower on Haystack Mountain in Connecticut. I thought it was fitting, finding a folly in a haystack. We had a great day out- I will create a post just about that trip.
