Next on my quest for folly towers is Bancroft Tower in Worcester, Massachusetts. This impressive structure was built in 1900 in memory of George Bancroft. This one did not require a hike, the parking lot was right next to it. The small park the tower is set on had no facilities or seating, but you could bring a picnic and sit on the grass under a tree.
We were sad to find out the door to the stairs was locked. You could peek through a hole in the door to see the stairs. On the other side, a large room with a fireplace (fake or real?) was also closed in with metal bars. I don’t know if they are ever open, I would love to have gone up to the top.
In front of the structure are two mock towers, with 4 wide steps on one side leading up so that people can have a picture taken and it will look like they are at the top of a high tower with crenellations. Each of the mock towers has a round stone in the middle that looks like a millstone, one of them is broken.
A lovely folly in the middle of Massachusetts!
