After looking at a bunch of patterns, I created my own variation for a knitted pumpkin. I think it’s great to have decor that you can drop on the floor without it shattering. This might have something to do with spending the last weekend inventorying 11 boxes of breakable things for my M.I.L. So, toss one of these on a table, a windowsill, let your kids play with it (don’t feed it to your dog or a baby).
Pumpkin pattern:
Using U.S. size 8 straight needles, cast on 40 stitches.
- Row 1. (Knit 4, Purl 2) repeat.
- Row 2. (Purl 4, knit 2) repeat.
- Continue in pattern for 16 rows. Thread a yarn needle through the live stitches and fasten. Sew to close any gaps in the gathering.
- Sew along the seam. Using the yarn needle, gather stitches from the cast on edge and begin to pull it closed. Stuff the pumpkin with filling, and finish pulling the edge together, leaving a pinky sized gap at the top.
Stem: Using 2 double-pointed needles and brown yarn, create a short I-cord. Insert the I-cord into the gap of the pumpkin and sew in place.
To make a larger pumpkin, cast on more stitches and make a proportionally larger rectangle.
Want one but don’t have time to make them? I’m selling on Etsy.
