Folly Quest Mount Greylock Tower #folly

Continuing our series of quests for folly (towers), we visited Mount Greylock in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, because of Covid, we were not able to go inside the War Memorial tower, but we still enjoyed our visit.

The drive was very pleasant until the last quarter of a mile, where we sat in line in our car, inching forward, to get to the parking lot. Parking was $20. We found out later we could have parked at an overlook and walked up a steep trail to avoid the fee. The lodge there serves food, restrooms were closed but (really disgusting) port-a-potties were available. The War Memorial tower looms over the area, holding up its decorative beacon into the overcast sky. This is definitely a tower that could be the hidden entrance to a magical school.

The view from the field next to the tower was inspiring. It was crowded, but we were able to keep our distance and get some great photos.

We climbed a tiny segment of the Appalachian trail, a very vertical segment with lots of rocks, made more treacherous to navigate due to an overly enthusiastic son and dog working in tandem.

If you want to go, I suggest going on a weekday. The leaves are still changing- some were already past peak, others hadn’t started. Nearby is the town of Adams, the Clark Art Institute, and MASS MoCA
