I wanted to create a plague mask, since I really don’t like having a mask touching my nose and lips. After playing around with one in felt, I realized it looks like a beak. So I adjusted the shape a little, and created one in cotton. It is made from three pieces: two identical sides and a triangular bottom. I tried making a ribbon to hold it to the back of my head, but it wasn’t secure, so I made the ribbon into ear loops.
For the “feathered” headband, I used an old headband and covered it in blue felt. I attached different colors of blue felt feather shapes. If I add a blue shawl, I’ll be ready for Halloween at the library. I realized that blue jays have black beaks, but then, I’m not trying to win an Audubon competition.
