Scottish Book Challenge continued

What I’ve read so far:

With star ratings 1-4, 4 being best.

  • Eleanor Olifphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman ***
  • The Cracked Spine by Paige Shelton *
  • Made in Scotland by Billy Connelly ****
  • Scottish History for Dummies by William Knox **
  • Outlander Knitting by Kate Atherby **
  • Scottish Highland Knits by Sarah Dallas **
  • Frommer’s England and Scotland **

Notes: I rate knitting books based on how many projects I want to make, and since I hate knitting with circular needles, some otherwise great books will get a poor rating from me.

I really wanted to like “The Cracked Spine” but it was written by an American and was not a good mystery. The main character had everything handed to her and the resolution was stupid, to be frank.

It was fascinating to hear about Billy Connelly’s life growing up in Glasgow and working at the ship yard before becoming a musician/comedian.

Eleanor Oliphant was set in modern Glasgow, a story about a woman with severe mental health issues dealing with her problems. Not my usual type but definitely a “book group” book.

What I’m currently reading:

  • Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott. (I’m in the middle of the book and Rob Roy hasn’t shown himself yer. The writing is dense and wordy, the main character is not likable. Slogging through it.)
  • The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson (listening to audiobook. Endearing curmudgeon rambles around Britain, so far hasn’t reached Scotland)
  • Godkiller by Hannah Kaner (Fantasy)
  • Clanlands by Sam Huegen (might put it back until I finish Outlander, just in case of spoilers)
  • Pocket Edinburgh by Lonely Planet
  • So many travel blogs…

On my list:

  • Something by Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island or Kidnapped)
  • Poor Things- Alasdair Gray
  • Knots and Crosses- Ian Rankin
  • Consider Phlebas -Iain Banks
  • The Mermaids Singing – Val McDermid
  • 44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith
