My final efforts at learning to crochet. I’ve dipped my toe in and I understand the basics, but I see that there is a lot more to learn.
I learned that UK and US terminology is different. In knitting, the needle sizes are different, but knit and purl are still knit and purl. In crochet, the terminology sounds like gymnastic judging- “Here’s a double triple half crochet, then a triple half single! What form!” Americans call the basic stitch single, UK calls it double, which changes all the higher stitches. Sort of like floors on an elevator…
I tried making a snake, but I was still using a too large hook, letting the stuffing show. I lost the hook from the pig kit. So I cracked open the octopus kit my friend had given me. It was less intimidating now that I had learned the basics (well, I still had to do the magic circle seven times to get it to work). Then as I reached the second tentacle I realized I was doing it wrong. Somehow I had to use the loops in a certain way, but I couldn’t figure out how. It did make an interesting spiral instead, so that’s cool. I finished making the tentacles and I burst out laughing. This fellow has 9 arms. My son googled nine in latin. “That’s a novempus!” he declared. I looked at google later, and decided maybe a nonapus? He also is a bit of squid and jellyfish too. I will name him squishy.
