Photography as a hobby

In June I’m exploring photography in my “Try a craft” project. My daughter and I went to DisneyWorld last week and whenever I go I get their photography package, Memory Maker. They have photographers stationed all around the four parks and the shopping area, and you can walk up to them and get a photo, which will be sent digitally to your phone. I think it’s a great service because if you’re taking the pictures, you’re not IN the pictures. Also they are in well-chosen spots and they help you pose. They even add in “magic” with Disney characters in some shots. The ride photos where I am in absolute terror and my daughter looks serene are hilarious. I think most of our best family photos come from these, not sessions in a studio. I got about 180 great pictures from this.

Learning how to pose, how to figure out lighting, and how to compose a shot are things I want to learn. I love taking pictures as a way of documenting events. I was journaling our trip with my daughter and we were scrolling through my pictures to figure out when we did certain things, before our memories blurred. My daughter has a minor in photography and will show me her camera, as well as talk about a side craft, cyanotype. My husband has a drone photography business and he can talk to me about that as well.
