Selby Library
So this library isn’t part of my system tour… think of it as a bonus. Selby Library is a branch of the Sarasota County Library System in Sarasota, Florida. They use Innovative for their catalog, and Evanced for their events. According to my Mum, who is a member, the branches are treated interchangeably, and when a book is returned to one branch after being borrowed from another, it is put on the shelf of the branch it’s returned to, instead of being sent home. (If someone who works there can verify this, it’s an interesting method, possibly because of courier issues? and it reminds me of the Borg from Star Trek).
This place is palatial.
When discussing library design, our system’s youth services coordinator talked a lot about the entrance to the children’s area. I think this one qualifies as impressive.
The aquarium is donated and maintained by the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.

The children’s area is well-stocked and has plenty of computers and seating. The teen area is secluded and slightly darker and more industrial, with gathering areas.
The Friends of the Library have a book store that will make other Friends groups sick with envy. It looks like a museum gift shop.
Upstairs people were waiting for their turn for tax help with AARP. They have a dedicated Maker Space called the Creation Station, with sewing machines and other creative tools.
I didn’t see where they have programs, but they do have study rooms.
Ok, so we can’t install mini sharks or balconies, but we can get ideas from their staff picks poster, hanging origami cranes and book club bags.
My professional review: fancy-shmancy and welcoming.
and possibly the Borg.
Jane is visiting all 36 locations of the Upper Hudson Library System (see introduction)
Wow! Florida is the place to be, apparently. KB loves our library so much that she starts grabbing books indiscriminately to take home when we tell it’s time to go. I can only imagine how hard it would be to get her to leave a library that had REAL LIVE FISH in addition to books.
