I’m trying to get my son into nature more (it was literally prescribed to him by his doctor). I asked him what would entice him, and he said waterfalls and shade, so here we go. I know the song says I should stick to the rivers and the lakes that I’m used to, but…what the hay.
On vacation in New Hampshire, all the blogs said that Flume Gorge was beautiful but touristy. I’m not a snob of doing the typical thing in a new place, because there is usually a reason it’s the typical thing (like going to Time Square in NYC).
On a hot day we got advanced tickets online (recommended) and started along the path. We went clockwise in a loop (apparently we were supposed to go counter-clockwise, but the signage didn’t tell us). There are two large waterfalls- Avalanche falls and Liberty falls. In one section, the trail goes along a wooden pathway with stairs next to the falls, with rock on both sides. Very beautiful.
My son enjoyed the falls but disliked the uphill portion of the hike. He wants a walking stick (he stole one from the woods and used it, badly, on this walk). His sister gave him a huge walking stick, about 5 feet tall, and I feel there might be some negotiations about that in the future.
